CC Ball ActionAdam Everett (from AE Tuts Plus) guest hosts MotionworksAfter Effects A-Z tip series with a look at CC Ball Action. If, like me, you just keep forgetting that effect is even there, you’ll see plenty of potential – and diverse – uses from 3D effects, text transitions and background design. Click here to watch.

Adam also mentions two other places to go for more Ball Action. A previous tutorial he’d done called Give Your Type Some Ball Action, and Video Copilot‘s 3D Ball Dispersion.

Build a Spooky Hallway in After Effects with John Dickinson

John Dickinson posted a new tutorial/walk-through on creating a dolly into a spooky 3Dish hallway using Photoshop‘s vanishing point filter. Besides being a great review of what’s possible with .vpe files in After Effects, John also makes extensive use of stock footage to add layer after layer of eerie atmosphere. One particularly interesting effect is the way he uses 2 different pieces of stock footage for a single logo reveal. So dim the lights, sit back and click here.

Cassidy Bisher shares tips on sound design in motion graphics

Published by John Stanowski on March 12th, 2011 - in After Effects

Cassidy ‘Cass’ Bisher is a freelance motion graphic designer and a Final Cut Certified Pro. He has worked with high-profile clients including Verizon and AT&T, and his work is seen on the Discovery Channel, History Channel and various TV commercials. Cass is also the owner and mograph designer at DropDrop.com, which designs and sells high quality After Effects templates.

It’s been said that the visuals in a motion graphics project are only half the final product; that it isn’t truly complete until it’s been fitted with music, whooshes, hits, beeps and beds. Taking a break from whizzing your After Effects layers through 3D space and turning on your speakers to find appropriate sound effects will help make your final product be all it can be. We’ve caught up with Cassidy Bisher from DropDrop.com to see what we could glean from his experience.

After Effects: A-Z is back

Published by John Stanowski on March 10th, 2011 - in After Effects, John Dickinson, Tutorial

A couple of new entries from John Dickinson‘s After Effects: Effects A-Z post series have sprung up on Motionworks.com. This is a terrific series as it lifts the hood on some of the more obscure effects built into the program that most of us wouldn’t even have known were there had there been no tutorial on them.

At first glance the Blend effect doesn’t really do anything that a twist of a layer’s opacity setting couldn’t accomplish on its own. But looks can be deceiving. Check it out here.

Next up is the Block Dissolve effect. Also appearing equally simple to fresh eyes, its true potential is fully revealed in John’s video tip.

Hopefully there will more A-Z coming from Motionworks.
