Creating Lightning: How RISE Visual Effects Brought Flash to Zeus’ Bolt

Posted on Friday, July 30, 2010 in Tutorial

Studio Daily is providing a complimentary webinar on Thursday, August 5 from 12pm to 1pm ET. VFX supervisor Florian Gellinger will deconstruct a scene from Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Tools used are Nuke and Sapphire plugins. Nevermind a lot of AE folk don’t use Nuke, this is an opportunity to see technique which could easily be reproduced using After Effects. And if you use Sapphire plugins all the better.

Some of the tasks to be examined involve an actor interacting with a lightning bolt and include:

  • show Zeus catching the CG lightning bolt
  • integrate the bolt in his hand
  • add chromatic aberration
  • add a plasma core
  • make its edges wobble
  • add a lightning “back bone”
  • add a huge variety of smaller and bigger, high-energy arcs on its surface
  • add heat distortion
  • add photographic glow and light interaction on Zeus

Tutorial: Make a large crowd in your videos – AE Basix

Posted on Thursday, July 29, 2010 in After Effects, Tutorial

In this tutorial from AEtuts+, James Whiffin explains 5 different basic ways to create a large crowd in your videos. Yes this is a 5 in1 tutorial!

The methods that explain James there are:

  • Simple Masking: It’s a tedious technique but is good for short clips.
  • Rotoscoping: With CS5 It’s a nice technique, but you will need a good Hardware for medium-large clips
  • Difference Matting: Good technique but you can find a good place to shot and control the Matte effects
  • Chroma Keying: I love this technique, although you will be more accurate than others is really amazing. Light is the Key, you get it? :D
  • Camera Technique: This is really powerfull with a good use of the Tracker and Stabilize Motion.

Enjoy duplicating friends and If you have free time you’ll can make a video like this.

You can see the preview below; also you can find the tutorial 5 in 1 here.

Rob Birnholz

Rob BirnholzRob Birnholz is owner of Absolute Motion Graphics, Inc., near Orlando, FL. With more than three decades of production and post experience, he’s not only older but hopefully wiser.

Rob graduated from The University of Florida with a degree in Broadcast Production, then began his career freelancing in the South Florida film industry, working on major features and commercial shoots. In the early 1980′s he formed his own video production company shooting, directing and editing high-end corporate projects for clients including PepsiCo and the Knight-Ridder Newspaper chain.

After relocating to Central Florida in the late 1980′s, Rob continued as a freelance Lighting-Cameraman and Editor working on projects ranging from Disney’s “Mickey Mouse Club” to cutting Super Bowl highlight packages for ESPN.

With the advent of desktop editing Rob discovered After Effects (version 1!) and his life changed forever. Shooting and directing faded into the background as Rob focused on new digital postproduction solutions, and his company, Absolute Motion Graphics, was formed.

Working largely in the non-broadcast arena, Rob loves recreating high-end looks and effects without having the same big-time budgets. He is a frequent guest speaker at user groups around the country, and many of his After Effects tutorials were distributed on the Digital Production Buzz newsletter.

Recent projects have been completed for T•Mobile, Walt Disney World, Kodak, General Motors, Long John Silvers, KFC, Subway, Cricket Communications and The Palm Springs International Film Festival. Rob’s website is at absolutemotiongraphics.com

Tutorial: 3D Paper Crumple with Freeform AE

Posted on Monday, September 14, 2009 in After Effects, FreeForm AE, Tutorial

Rob Birnholz has a fantastic new tutorial out about making a 3D wad of paper in Digieffects FreeForm AE. He says “Next time you get a frustrating assignment that you didn’t ask for, don’t crumple it up and throw it at your boss’s face. Now you can easily call it quits within After Effects! Rob uses the example of creating a paper crumple transition to show off the Digieffects plugin Freeform AE. Who knows… this tutorial might just save your job.”

Rob released Professional Training for the After Effects Camera Toolfarm Expert Series a month ago and it has been getting rave reviews:

Very, very nice tutorial – great projects, great teaching – Mark Spencer

Just saw the After Effects Camera Training video from Rob Birnholz and it’s outstanding. I thought I was pretty good with the old AE camera, having used it for many years, but Rob made me aware of several new techniques and tricks I had not encountered before. Way to go, Rob. – Jack Tunnicliffe, Visual Effects Artist and Owner of Java Post Production, Regina, Saskatchewan

And here’s a free chapter of AE Camera Training: Auto Orient Layers to Camera.
