This week’s free footage from Artbeats and Pond5
This week’s Free Clip from Artbeats is a full HD shot trucking through the woods. And Pond5 is offering a free full HD clip of heavy rain falling on a pavement. What might one do with either of clips I don’t know. But you could download them for free and save them for when you have a use… or for a rainy day. You’ll have to sign in to get the clips at both sites. (At Pond5 it’s not really clear how it works. You need to add the clip to your cart and when you check out the amount due will be $0.) Also, while you’re at the Pond5 site you might want to grab a set of 25 free sound effects as well. Some are practical, some are easily motion-graphics-ish.
Red Giant Knoll Unmult: Free CS5-ready Plug-in
If you watched episode 47 of Red Giant TV, aside from being humbled by the amazingness of Tiny Inventions, you may also have caught a notation about Knoll Unmult – a free plug-in for removing black backgrounds and generating mattes. Here is a 3-minute excerpt from the tutorial that explains what it does and how it works:

Free abstract background footage from Artbeats

This week’s Artbeats freebie is a 20 second abstract background HD clip. Remember, backgrounds don’t have to settle for just being backgrounds. They could be masked inside of text or used as a compositing layer with the right blending mode. And it’s always a good idea to have a collection of stock elements for times when time is short. Get the clip here.

Creating worlds
A new tutorial, free planet texture maps and a crazy new plugin from Subblue
Chris Johnson-Standley’s new written tutorial, Create a Gas Giant Planet Scene in After Effects, over at Aetuts+ shows you how to make and texture your own planet scene using nothing more than After Effects. It’s a nice introduction to what’s possible using Fractal Noise to create textures from scratch.
Even more free textures… not that we’re complaining

Photographer Caleb Kimbrough has a passion for finding and capturing textures and lucky for us, he likes to share. He collected over 450 samples from his collection and made them available on his website Zen Textures. The images cover a wide range of textures including paper, concrete, fabric, stone, metal, wood and, of course, grunge. The images are fairly big and perfect for adding a little tactile flair to your After Effects projects. The textures are free to download and use in personal and commercial projects.
