Meter with Rollovers and Growing Scale

Don’t ask what I had to do this for.
But, there are some cool ideas here for making an expression based “rollover” effect as well as a bar that follows along, all driven by a Null locator. Take a look and see what you can do with it.

A pre-rigged and expressionized butterfly, just for you! The wings flap continuously using a wee bit o’ trigonometry. File includes the AE project and the artwork for the butterfly. DOWNLOAD THE PROJECT FOLDER HERE (REQUIRES AE7)

Rockin’ VU Meters

Rock out with some way cool VU meters. This is produced with 4 Color Gradient and Mosaic for most of the effect. Then the meter is masked using the Grid effect. Then I put some crazy wiggle and random expressions in there to make things move in stereo.
Did you know that “VU” stands […]

I Call this "Random Little Doodlies"

I drew out a bunch of lines like the in Illustrator, then decided that I’d like them to move. Then I decided that I want these to have a mind of their own. So, I put some expression wierdness on there.
All it is.. is the Beam effect and some Wingding type (the box) […]

Expressions 101 : Starting From Scratch

I see people very interested in using Expressions, but they feel so intimidated by the complexity of the examples they see on places like motionscript.com or even my own humble site, graymachine.com.
So, let’s start at the beginning. This not only help you, but it will help me get back to the basics, and make sure […]

"Overshoot" Type Preset

Like many of these AE Freemart posts, this one started as a question on a forum: how to make letters animate on one-by-one with a little overshoot and then snap back into place. I’m not sure if I did it the best way, but it works. There is an expression slider that drives the […]

Random Circle Segments

This is a project that comes from a tutorial I recorded about using random number expressions with After Effects to help generate design elements with randomness. I thought it was kinda cool, but it is one of the least popular tutorials.
This uses the Circle and Radial Wipe effects in combination with some expressions to […]

The Final Countdown

This countdown uses one text layer with an expression driving the countdownWhy make a script based countdown? Because you can! Actually, with the type in one layer, you can easily change your typeface and position the one layer wherever you want.
Also, the script ensures the accuracy of the countdown, if that matters to you.
Here’s the […]

Scene, Date, and Time Overlay

Sometimes we render multiple animations for a project. And OCCASIONALLY the client gives us changes and/or we make mistakes that we need to keep track of and troubleshoot.
I’ve found that as I do renders, it can be helpful to put an overlay on the the animation that has the render date and the running time […]

The Infallible Scale Expression

So, you are doing one of those projects with lots and lots of pictures. Some are 400×300 and some seem to be monstrous. Wouldn’t be nice if we could simply say “scale this stupid picture to the size of my comp, regardless of the size of my picture, comp resolution, picture composition or pixel […]
