Using displacement maps for glassy look transitions in After Effects

Eran Stern‘s new Artbeats tutorial shows you how to use Displacement Maps in After Effects for “glassy look transitions”. In this tutorial he uses a logo created in Cinema 4D to drive the transition, but you can still use these techniques sans the 3D.

Make a lower third in After Effects

Steve Holmes of Energi Design has just released a new tutorial on how to create a lower third in After Effects. Though this 30-minute video is also one big long commercial for Artbeats stock footage, you can, of course, use your own. If making lower thirds isn’t on your to do list, you’d still get to get A LOT out of this video. Steve masterly uses such effects as CC Toner, Shift Channels and Transform. And I’ve never seen anyone make the Glow effect work so well as in this tutorial. You’ll also get tons of tips on masks, time stretch and turning a solid into an adjustment layer. This week’s Free Clip from Artbeats is a full HD shot trucking through the woods. And Pond5 is offering a free full HD clip of heavy rain falling on a pavement. What might one do with either of clips I don’t know. But you could download them for free and save them for when you have a use… or for a rainy day. You’ll have to sign in to get the clips at both sites. (At Pond5 it’s not really clear how it works. You need to add the clip to your cart and when you check out the amount due will be $0.) Also, while you’re at the Pond5 site you might want to grab a set of 25 free sound effects as well. Some are practical, some are easily motion-graphics-ish.

Break the boundaries of 3D in After Effects with Steve Holmes

Steve Holmes is back with a new tutorial and he wants to show you how to “break the boundaries of 3D” in After Effects. He’ll remind you that in After Effects we’re really only dealing with 2.5D, but will show you how to “achieve that extra .5D” with techniques setting up and lighting your scene. This is a great primer (or reminder) for After Effects lights, shadows, material options, etc. Watch the tutorial at Artbeats.com.
