Breathing Old Life into New Lens Flares

Remember that old HBO opening sequence from the mid 80s? There’s been some discussion about it over at mograph.  So, I was watching this ‘making of’ and I was struck by all of the cool things they did in-camera, rather than CG (ok, so I guess I am not THAT old). One […]

My God, it’s full of…

Stars!!  Here’s a handy FFX preset to create some procedural stars in After Effects CS3. I’ve included some controls for the number of stars and a 2D position control.
Mostly, this uses Fractal Noise (what CAN’T this plug-in do?).  But, to smooth things out, there is some Blur and Level adjustment.   Don’t worry, though, I’ve […]

Additional Scripts for AE

Apparently, changing around some frequently used Shortcut Keys is a sore topic for some people.  Scripting guru Jeff Amasol has some written some JSX scripts that allow users to do some amazing things.  Included in the set is an interface to modify your own shortcut keys in After Effects, as well as an ASE importer, […]

Copy Image for AE

This is a neat plug-in courtesy of ObviousFX that brings a long needed functionality to After Effects. When installed, Copy Image will allow you to copy the current frame in the timeline to the clipboard for use in Photoshop, or whatever.

“DeMult” for CS3

I used to be a frequent user of UnMult from Red Giant, a free plug-in that used the Luminance of a layer to create an alpha channel. However, as a CS3 user, Unmult (and FanDev’s XMult) don’t work just yet.
Using “Shift Channels” and the new “Remove Color Matting”, however, seems to do the trick. […]

3D Beam

If you want a 3D line connected by two points in 3D space in AE, it’s a bit tricky. What you need to do is use the Beam Effect on a 2D solid, and connect the start and end points to some 3D Nulls. The Beam start and end points use the […]

Water Color Mask

This is a 1280×720 mask done with water color brushes. It’s handy to keep these things around for texture, video mattes, etc. I created this for a “lounge” that has a name that suggests vibrant color (can you tell I have an NDA on this job?) and had some vibrant ink colors spill […]

Nightclub Lights

This is a spinning nightclub style element I came up with for a project using 4 Color Gradient, Trapcode Shine, and Knoll Light Factory. Pacifier not included. Project is 720p.
