Just the Tip: New AE Tutorial Series

ShiveringCactus has some quick new videos in their Just the Tip series. These videos teache Expressions and more in After Effects. Be sure to subscribe to their channel to keep on top of their latest releases.

Just the tip: Linking CC Particle World to a 3D Null in After Effects

First, the tutorial. Below, I’ll paste the expressions:

Expressions:
Position X:
x=thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).transform.position[0]-thisComp.width/2;
x/thisComp.width;

Position Y:
y=thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).transform.position[1]-thisComp.height/2;
y/thisComp.width;

Position Z:
z=thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).transform.position[2];
z/thisComp.width;

Just the tip: Using expressions to roll a ball or sphere in After Effects

He explains that in this tutorial, an expression is used to calculate how much a circle or image should rotate. To clarify, this is established by its horizontal position. If you want to roll 3D objects, his expression gives that option.

Expressions:

2D Layer
diameter=width;
pi=Math.PI;
circumference=diameter*pi;
rot=360/circumference;
Xpos=thisLayer.transform.position[0];
scalePercent=thisLayer.transform.scale[0]/100;
rot*Xpos/scalePercent

CC Sphere in one dimension:
diameter=effect(“CC Sphere”)(“Radius”)
pi=Math.PI;
circumference=diameter*pi;
rot=360/circumference;
Xpos=thisLayer.transform.position[0];
scalePercent=thisLayer.transform.scale[0]/100;
rot*Xpos/scalePercent

CC Sphere coming towards camera:
diameter=effect(“CC Sphere”)(“Radius”)
pi=Math.PI;
circumference=diameter*pi;
rot=360/circumference;
Xpos=thisLayer.transform.position[0];
scalePercent=thisLayer.transform.scale[0]/100;
rot*Xpos/scalePercent*-1

Project file

At the moment he has 3 tutorials out in the Just the Tip series. It looks like he’s doing about 1 per month. Great stuff!

Boris FX Mocha Pro

The Boris FX Mocha Pro planar motion tracking system is widely used to manipulate existing pictorial content; insert new backgrounds and foregrounds; “build” set extensions; overlay digital makeup for blood, wounds and aging; protect witness identities in news segments; blur and remove logos in reality programming; stabilize and improve shaky handheld footage; and generally enable “fix it in post” applications. Mocha’s robust planar tracker with its GPU acceleration, advanced roto with edge-snapping, 3D camera solver and stereo 360/VR support, provides accurate contextual tracking information even when there are no clearly defined points in the image. The ease of use and ability to exchange rotoscoping data with other image processing tools have resulted in widespread industry adoption of this essential software.

Silhouette

Silhouette streamlines the laborious tasks of rotoscoping, keying and matting with their innovative portfolio of rotoscoping tools including texture-free tracking, inverse kinematics, granular manual editing tools, on-the-fly viewer stabilization and semi-automatic matte extraction. Silhouette artists seamlessly rotoscope blowing leaves, waving blades of grass, individual strands of hair and even falling snow. The core of Silhouette’s hybrid paint system lies in algorithms and data structures enabling the automatic recording of every raster paint stroke and brush setting to a journal of events that can be repeated on one or many frames with or without tracking data.

Got Character? Part 2: Animating Characters in Adobe Character Animator and After Effects

We’ve covered animating characters recently, generally speaking, but there’s always more to talk about! The first part of our series, Got Character? Animating Characters Character Animator/After Effects has a lot of great content. Definitely, check it out.

Funny Characters Animation After Effects Tutorial

Motion Design School shows you how to animate characters on a roller coaster. There’s not a lot of “character animation” going on here, per se. There’s no rigging, no walk cycles, etc. This animates the whole scene. It reminds me a bit of Sponge Bob Square Pants for some reason. Fun stuff.

Okay Samurai Tutorials

Okay Samurai has super fun and useful tutorials for Adobe Character Animator. Here are a few recent ones. Be sure to check out the Okay Samurai YouTube Channel.

Advanced Rigging: Monster Camp (Adobe Character Animator Tutorial)

Download the free puppet “Sirr” and play along. In this tutorial, he animates a different arm structure than usual. Also, he applies paper texturing, uses a deep trigger system with marshmallows that catch on fire and burn and adds glowing highlights and shadows. Finally, he replays the pose system and creates a customized controls panel. There’s a lot here, indeed!

Basic Eye Rigging (Adobe Character Animator Tutorial)

Give personality to your characters by animating the eyes! Okay Samurai shows you some great tricks. Similarly, Download the assets here.
